Steve Pequignot

Steve Pequignot (pronounced pic-a-nu) began his rail career with the former Norfolk and Western Railway in 1967. He learned the important roll of a union early in his career. Steve first became a union officer in 1971 when he was elected as the lodge recording secretary. In 1974, Steve was appointed as Secretary of the lodge local protective committee. This appointment gave him the opportunity to learn the fine art of union representation from his mentor Robert Dillman. When Mr. Dillman resigned in 1978, Steve was elected to the office of local chairman, an office he enjoyed and held for 26 years. Steve is one of just a few local chairmen in the country to hold a local chairman office for nine consecutive terms.

In 1986, Steve was elected to the executive committee of former Nickel Plate Joint Protective Board 350. In 1992 Joint Protective Board 350 merged into Board 200. At its 1993 Convention, Steve was elected as Vice General Chairman, a position he maintained until 1997.

Steve accepted a challenge in 2000 by Norfolk Southern to become involved in their safety program to help reduce injuries on the railroad. That year he became the chairman of the Fort Wayne Terminal Safety Committee and in two years helped change the safety process in the mechanical department on the Lake Division. In 2002, the Lake Division had the lowest injuries per man-hour worked on the system, and won the NS Mechanical Bell for the division for the first time. As a result of the turnaround, in March 2003, Steve was one of three system-wide labor employees invited to speak at the corporate safety awards presentation in Norfolk, Virginia.

Steve continued his work in safety as facilitator for Mechanical Department on the Lake Division, along with serving as a union officer until he retired from railroad service March 1, 2009. He is still an appointed lodge officer of his local lodge serving as Webmaster of the lodge website. Lodge 6760’s website (tcu6760.com) was the first-ever published website by any unit of TCU.

Steve performs volunteer service in his community including the Neighbor Watch Crime Prevention Program, is president of his 450-home (cherryhillfw.com) neighborhood association, and is also the touring director of the local bike club (3rvs.com) in Fort Wayne.

Steve lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his wife Karen. They have two married daughters and four grandchildren.
